Background of the Study
Sorting algorithms play a critical role in the efficient management of student databases in universities. They allow for the fast organization and retrieval of data, ensuring quick access to essential student information such as academic records, contact details, and personal histories (Meyer et al., 2023). Federal University, Lafia, located in Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, manages large volumes of student data that require efficient sorting mechanisms to ensure smooth academic and administrative operations. Commonly used sorting algorithms, such as quicksort, mergesort, and bubblesort, vary significantly in their computational efficiency. Comparing these algorithms in the context of student database management will provide insights into the most efficient methods for handling large datasets in academic institutions.

Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Lafia, faces challenges related to the slow processing and retrieval of student records, especially as the number of students increases. While sorting algorithms are fundamental to improving database management, the university's current systems may not be utilizing the most efficient algorithms for handling large student datasets. This inefficiency results in delays in processing administrative requests, student registrations, and academic records management. The need for a detailed comparison of sorting algorithms is essential to optimize these processes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To compare the performance of different sorting algorithms in managing student databases at Federal University, Lafia.
  2. To assess the impact of each algorithm on the speed and efficiency of database management.
  3. To recommend the most suitable sorting algorithm for large-scale student data management in academic institutions.

Research Questions

  1. Which sorting algorithm performs best for managing large student databases at Federal University, Lafia?
  2. How do the performance and speed of different sorting algorithms compare when applied to the university's student database?
  3. What is the impact of the chosen sorting algorithm on overall administrative efficiency?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The quicksort algorithm will outperform other sorting algorithms in terms of speed and efficiency for student database management.
  2. Sorting algorithms will have a significant impact on the time taken to process student records, with more efficient algorithms reducing processing time.
  3. The performance of sorting algorithms will directly affect the overall efficiency of administrative tasks at the university.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide Federal University, Lafia, with valuable insights into the performance of various sorting algorithms, helping the institution select the most efficient algorithm for managing its student databases. The findings will contribute to improved administrative processes, faster student record management, and enhanced user experience for both staff and students.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the comparison of sorting algorithms for student database management at Federal University, Lafia, within Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State. The study will not cover other aspects of database management or algorithm applications outside of student records.

Definitions of Terms
Sorting Algorithm: A method used to reorder a list or array of data elements based on certain criteria.
Database Management: The process of storing, retrieving, and organizing data within a database system.
Quicksort: A divide-and-conquer sorting algorithm that selects a pivot element and partitions the data around it for faster sorting.
